 New York Philharmonic to tour China this summer time


NEW YORK — The New York Philharmonic will give 5 live shows in China this summer time in what it says shall be first go to to the mainland by a U.S. orchestra since 2019.

Outgoing music director Jaap van Zweden will conduct the performances at Guangzhou, Nanjing and Shanghai from June 27 to July 3, the orchestra stated Thursday. Baritone Thomas Hampson will be a part of as a soloist in Guangzhou and Shanghai.

Van Zweden’s closing live performance with the orchestra as music director shall be at Vail, Colorado, on July 20.

Van Zweden succeeded Alan Gilbert as music director within the 2018-19 season. He introduced in September 2021 that the 2023-24 season shall be his final. Gustavo Dudamel will take over however is not going to begin till 2026-27.

Van Zweden will turn into music director of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France beginning in 2026-27.
